BRINGING BACK THE VINYL
By Cohen Whipps
A Vinyl Record Music Program designed to expand students’ knowledge of music genres and artists has been introduced in the YES Centre at PASS this year.
Students choose the music they want to listen to across a wide spectrum of genres, with artists from 1950s through to present day. They listen to vinyl records played on a record player.
Some genres looked at so far include Hip Hop, New York/UK Punk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Grime, Death Metal, Post Hardcore, Country and Western, Blues and Jazz.
Students discuss the genre of music, where the artists roots are from, what their background is, who they have influenced and who they are influenced by, the labels they’re signed to, what clothes they wear, how much the artist has changed through time.
They document what they experience in journals, including what they have liked and disliked about a certain band or artist and anything new they have learned.
The program was introduced in Term 2, after a student suggested it as a possible path to explore. It will also be running next year in the YES Centre.
Future plans include getting instruments and forming a band for next year.
YES Centre students Ollie Arthur and Cohen Whipps are two students involved in the Vinyl record Music Program.
